The History of Greeting Cards

   The custom of sending greeting cards is older as one might think. To celebrate the New Year, the ancient Chinese exchanged messages of good will. Traces of greeting cards were left also by the old Egyptians, who conveyed their greeting on papyrus. Closer to our days, in the early 1400s, the Germans exchanged printed New Year's greetings from woodcuts, and paper Valentines were being exchanged in different parts of Europe. A Valentine made in the 1400s, kept in the British Museum, is the oldest known greeting card in existence.
   Although Valentines cards began to appear after 1400, the tradition of sending greeting cards goes back only about 200 years, in the early 1800s. The greeting cards were pretty expensive then and were sent mostly by the elite. In the mid 1800s, due to advances in printing, the expensive and handmade greeting cards were replaced by the less expensive printed cards. The greeting cards became that way an affordable and popular means of communication.
   In 1843, Sir Henry Cole started in London the commercial era of the greeting cards by commissioning the first commercial Christmas cards. The featured picture represented a family with a small child drinking wine together. Although an controversial idea, 1000 cards were printed and completely sold for a shilling each. The early English greeting cards favored spring themes with flowers and fairies, only rarely featuring religious or winter themes. Popular were also the sentimental images and humorous ones.
   In America, the first one to offer greeting cards was Louis Prang, in 1875. Due to the popularity of his greeting cards, cheap imitations appeared driving him eventually from the commercial market.
   The "Official" era of the greeting cards began in the 1840s with Christmas greeting cards issued by Queen Victoria. In 1953 America followed.
   The greeting cards mass production began in 1860s, leaded by companies like Marcus Ward & Co, Goodall and Charles Bennett, which employed well known artists as Kate Greenaway and Walter Crane.
   Today the greeting cards as well as the eCards are well established as means of congratulation for all kind of occasion, leading holidays being in order Christmas, Valentine, Mother Day and Easter.

The animated eCards require the Adobe Flash plug-in and a soundcard. Javascript is also required to view the eCards collection. The site is best viewed at resolutions greater than 1024x768. The site was tested with the following browsers (Windows, Linux and/or Mac operating systems): Firefox, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Opera. Following browsers were quickly tested / used: Safari, Netscape, Mozilla, few PDA/Phone browsers. Thank you to all those testing it!
